EU Trip – Brussels 2014

This February 46 students from Lancashire Law School embarked on a 5 day trip to Belgium’s capital city, Brussels. Students, from both the main UCLan Campus as well as some from our Campus in Burnley, visited numerous influential sites during the EU trip. The annual trip is an amazing opportunity to visit some the Europe’s most influential legal institutions, allowing students to explore and apply a practical method to their learning.

During the visit students took part in numerous seminars based around EU Law at the European Commission, including one from guest speaker Mr Mark Corner where he hosted a number of enlightening discussions on topics such as ‘The role of the European Commission in the EU’ and ‘The EU Single Market’.

The group went on to visit the European Parliament where they observed three guest speakers, including a Q&A session with Theresa Griffin, North West Labour Party candidate to the European Parliament, and Claude Moraes MEP, Labour MEP for London and Member of the European Parliament Standing Committee on ‘Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs’.

Students also visited the European Parliament Interactive Visitor Centre, which was to be one of the highlights of the visit. The group took a tour of the dynamic, interactive multimedia displays which guides visitors through the journey of European integration and the impact this has on our everyday lives. This helped students to understand the interplay between the EU Institutions.

Towards the end of the trip students detoured to Luxembourg where they visited the Court of Justice of the European Union. As the Court was not in session that particular week the group were lucky enough to have a fascinating guided tour around the Courts instead.

One student commented on how useful the trip was for their studies “Academically, the trip exceeded my expectations. We developed as students in ways beyond the scope of a classroom; gradually exploring each component of the EU. Ultimately, the success of the trip was due to the amazing staff present who were full of enthusiasm and inspired us to fully take advantage of all the opportunities available.” Iram Ramzan.
