The Law Clinic opened its doors again on 9 September 2015 and will be closing for summer after our last clinic on 20 July 2016. During that time we will have dealt with 250 inquiries and our 70 student volunteers will have advised over 100 clients. Referrals have been coming in thick and fast from Citizens Advice and the local courts or people are simply finding us on google. All our students’ advice is supervised by solicitors who are either in-house lecturers or external solicitors willing to partner with UCLan and give of their time freely. We are extremely grateful to them for their time and their expertise, without which we could not offer the service. Special thanks to solicitors from Forbes, Curtis Law, Ellen Court Partnership, Meade Law, Keoghs Nicholls Lindsell & Harris and Slater & Gordon.
As well as dealing with everyday advice on matters such as divorce, contact with children, consumer disputes, property, personal injury, to name just a few, we have also run a successful Wills Week event where our students have drafted wills for staff. This proved hugely popular and we have an extremely long waiting list for next time – watch this space. Thanks to Martin Salisbury who put the students through their paces. I’m delighted that we made it happen – it had been Martin’s dream for many years.
UCLan has a shop in the centre of Preston, called UCLan ‘In the City’. If you didn’t know about it, go and check it out. There are regular events, open days, training sessions and the Law Clinic is involved too. It’s a pilot for 6 months and you will find us on a Wednesday morning with the Citizens Advice offering a drop-in session. Spread the word or pop in yourself if you need some information or some assistance on any particular issue. We are here to help!
Last, but not least, can I thank all the students who have given of their time freely and willingly to go the extra mile and get involved in real-client work. Certificates were distributed to everyone who could attend our Celebratory Lunch on 20 June 2016 and a very special award was presented to Farhana Ali (pictured), our Law Clinic Volunteer of the Year. Farhana has participated in the Law Clinic, helped at the Law Fair, assisted with the organisation and admin and she also volunteers at the Personal Support Unit at Preston Court. She has done so well this year and should be extremely proud of her achievements – we are!
